If there’s one thing I’ll never talk myself out of, it’s a good Summer dress. They’re the most effortless thing in my whole wardrobe — you slip one on, add your sandals, and you’re done. No outfit to ‘build’ and nothing to overthink. And when the temperature climbs, which it’s been doing on repeat this year, a dress is often the only thing I actually want to wear. So I thought I’d share the five kinds of Summer dresses I find myself coming back to again and again. Running through my fail-safe long white dresses, all the way to the odd joyful pop of colour. And whatever your style, I’d wager there’s at least one in here with your name on it.

My go-to, fail-safe piece every single season has to be a white summer dress. I have several, I love them all, and somehow I never tire of them, which is precisely why I never feel guilty adding another to the collection. Trust me, they all earn their keep. The one thing I’m genuinely fussy about is the cotton. A white dress is usually fairly minimal by design, so the fabric is doing all the talking, and I want the nicest quality I can find within my own budget. It’s worth spending a little more here if you can, because a good cotton hangs better, lasts longer, and simply looks more expensive. And with the heatwaves we keep having, a breathable, moisture-wicking fabric stops being a luxury and starts being a necessity.

Now, anyone who knows my style well knows, I’m a neutral lover through and through — more on that in a moment. But if there’s one season that tempts me out of my comfort zone, it’s Summer. Maybe it’s the sunshine coaxing me into something brighter, or maybe the brands are simply making more that I love, but this year I’ve genuinely found myself drawn to colour. Show me an electric blue or a bright orange dress in 2026 and to my own surprise, I’m all in. If colour feels like a leap, my tip is to let the dress be the whole outfit. Keep everything else pared right back, with neutral sandals and simple gold jewellery, and let that one bold shade do all the work.

Lace has been with us for a few seasons now, and it shows no sign of going anywhere. What I love is just how many ways there are to wear it. You can go all in with a barely-there, lace-trimmed slip dress — or you can keep things subtle, with a delicate trim at the neckline or along the hem. The high street has really embraced this one, so whether you want a whisper of lace or a full romantic moment, there’s something at every price point. For me, a little goes a long way. A fine trim against a simple shape feels feminine without ever tipping into fussy.

I’ll be honest, print and I have a slightly complicated relationship. As a devoted less-is-more sort, I don’t tend to wear a great deal of it, at least not the loud, elaborate kind. Busy prints can feel a little chaotic to me, and life is hectic enough without my dress joining in. But there are two exceptions I’ll always make room for: stripes and polka dots. There’s something so timeless, French, and a little bit cute, about both, and neither ever feels like it’s trying too hard. A navy-and-white stripe or a light scattering of spots gives you all the charm with a whole lot less noise. And if we can’t allow ourselves to feel a little bit cute in Summer, then honestly, when can we?

A Neutral Summer Love

And here we are, back on home ground. Neutrals are truly at the core of how I dress, but I always want to gently make the case that neutral doesn’t just mean beige. It’s a whole spectrum of beautiful shades, from soft whites and ecrus through to tan, caramel and chocolate, all the way to black and lots of lovely shades in between. And I’m not remotely afraid of a black summer dress, either. I think it can be one of the chicest things you can wear, over 40, over 60, at any age at all. Lately, though, my heart belongs to the warmer end of the scale: those rich brown and toffee tones that look wonderful against sun-kissed skin and quietly go with everything you already own. A warm-brown dress is my current definition of my favoured understated, effortless style

Neutral doesn’t just mean beige, far from it! There’s a whole spectrum of beautiful neutrals to choose from, it’s just a bit of trial and error finding the right ones for you.
